Keeping the memory alive...

Less than 100 years ago, the people of Saint-Lô were still under German occupation and had absolutely no idea what was about to happen to them!

A bit of history…

The allied troops had just landed on the beaches and their planes were flying over the skies of Saint-Lô, to begin what would be known locally as 'La nuit de feu' (the night of fire). The locals, hundreds of whom had already fled the area, later witnessed the tragedy that had hit their town, which would be given the devastating nickname of 'Capital of ruins'.

The price of freedom!

The journey was a long one for the allied troops, the wooded countryside had been taken over by German defence systems. This 'War of the Hedgerows' and 'Operation Cobra' were key events in the fight for freedom and will forever be remembered in this area.

Summer 1944, the time for freedom was finally upon us. The people of Saint-Lô could look to the future and begin rebuilding their town, but they would never forget this war.

Time to rebuild...
